Why instrument sterilization is necessary
Sterilization is the process of treating instruments, making them completely safe for use. It kills 100% of all microbes and viruses. When working with nails and surrounding skin, there is always a significant risk of encountering mycoses (fungi), inflammatory processes, and bloodborne diseases (HIV, hepatitis). To prevent infection and transmission of infection, professional sterilization and disinfection of manicure instruments are necessary.
According to Sanitary Regulations, all instruments that can damage the integrity of human skin must be sterilized.
The beauty industry closely intersects with medicine, as technicians deal with the body and organism of another person. However, unlike medical institutions, the beauty industry is not as regulated by norms and standards. Technicians themselves must ensure compliance to avoid risks for clients and keep up with the times.
Which instrument sterilizer to choose?
There are two important factors to consider before purchasing a sterilizer for manicure instruments.
1. Manufacturer and certificates.
It should be official, with a warranty and all necessary certificates. A high-quality sterilizer is equivalent to medical equipment. Therefore, we recommend paying attention to 2 domestic brands: MizMa (dry heat sterilizers and autoclaves) and Mikrostop (dry heat sterilizers).
2. The number of instrument sets sterilized in one load.
Base your decision on your client flow and how many processed instruments you need per client.
- For a solo practitioner, compact dry heat sterilizers for 3-6 instrument sets may be suitable.
- For beauty salons and larger studios with multiple practitioners, machines for 6-10 instrument sets or more are needed.
- For cosmetology offices where there aren't as many instruments that can damage the skin, a dry heat sterilizer for 1-3 instrument sets may be sufficient.
Dry heat sterilizer or autoclave?
These are two types of sterilizers that operate on different principles.
Dry heat sterilizers (dry heat cabinets) sterilize instruments by maintaining a high temperature in the chamber for a period of time.
Autoclave sterilization occurs by injecting steam under pressure. Pathogens are destroyed at lower temperatures, allowing autoclaves to sterilize not only metal instruments but also other materials for which high temperatures are hazardous.
Autoclaves are used more commonly in medical facilities such as dental clinics, hospitals, and tattoo studios. They are more expensive than dry heat cabinets. For nail technicians, we recommend purchasing a dry heat cabinet for manicure instruments.
Processing manicure tools: 4 mandatory stages
Purchasing a dry heat sterilizer does not limit the processing of instruments. The entire sterilization cycle consists of 4 stages.
- Disinfection of instruments — Disinfection is carried out using a working solution of a disinfectant. Disinfection kills 70% of microorganisms.
- Pre-sterilization cleaning of instruments (PSC) — This stage involves cleaning the instruments to remove any residues of disinfectant as well as micro-particles of blood and skin.
- Sterilization, which we recommend to be done in a dry heat sterilizer or autoclave. Instruments that cannot be processed with heat, such as some drills, can be treated using a chemical method.
- Storage of instruments in sterile conditions. There are 2 options: in craft bags and in a UV cabinet.
We recommend using craft bags for the dry heat sterilizer.
